n the late twentieth century, the drive to limit construction costs and the parallel cultural move toward austerity resulted in many bland, generic architectural environments that left non-professional users uninvolved and uninspired. Bill Gould Design (BGD) addresses this issue through creative, economical architectural solutions and the reintegration of art into architecture. Bill Gould started the Art in Architecture program in 1994 and since has successfully collaborated with several professional artists in the creation of extraordinary public and private buildings.

"Until about 75 years ago, there was never a strong distinction between the architect and artist. Da Vinci and Michelangelo not only designed buildings, but also the art that went with them. With the modern and post-modern movements, decorative building elements that users understand and enjoy have been largely eliminated"

GD provides both full-service architectural design and public art. President and principal architect William E. Gould, AIA, founded the firm in 1996 with a specific goal of bridging educational architecture and public, participatory art. Prior to establishing BGD, Mr. Gould launched the San Jose regional office for a large, national design firm, acting for two years as Vice President/Principal-in-Charge.

His decision to start his own practice was made with the conviction that a smaller firm permits Principals to respond more effectively to clients' needs without the distraction of organizational or corporate demands. We have consciously developed a practice that allows us to focus on just a few clients in order to provide the highest level of communication and service.
