he Spirit Gate, located at the entrance of Hester Elementary School in downtown San Jose, is a clear example of the efforts BGD has made to unify art and architecture in a public arena. The new San Jose landmark is an 8' circular doorway made out of curved terrazzo columns and situated between two redwood trees. Hester students chose the powerful works inscribed on the metal portion of The Spirit Gate, a functional piece of public art that unites the school and surrounding community. Bill Gould and Glen Rogers designed the piece's actual tile pattern and metal gate, which were fashioned after student sketches, to attach to the curved columns.
