owntown College Prep (DCP) is a three-year-old charter High School specifically geared to providing disadvantaged students with the skills and abilities for college acceptance. Their unique program utilizes many downtown resources to extend the student's education, such as having science classes at the Tech Museum of Innovation. Having grown to over 300 students, the school was able to secure a lease on a 34,000 sf former health club located in the heart of downtown San Jose. Bill Gould Design (BGD) was able to fit all of the school's program into the two story building, including 15 classrooms, a library/multimedia center, gymnasium, cafeteria, photo lab, and administrative offices. BGD worked closely with the many parties involved in the project, including the property owner, Redevelopment Agency, and Building Department to fast track the project to go from lease signing to building occupancy in only eight weeks.
