rnesto Galarza Elementary School, San Jose Unified School District's first new school in 22 years, has all the features of a modern, technologically advanced educational facility. As stated by architecture critic Alan Hess of the San Jose Mercury News, "Galarza points the way to a new imagination and originality in school design. Architect Bill Gould brings a sculptor's eye to everything from the curving roof to the star burst face on the clock tower of San Jose's new Galarza School, creating a playful mix critical to the success of the building." Designed to eventually accommodate 750 students, the facility includes 21 classrooms, a media center and technology lab, a multi-purpose cafeteria, and a day care center. The classrooms are arranged in pairs to share a small group room and multi-media equipment. Skylights provide natural lighting to both the first and second floor corridors, and windows on two floors of the classroom building allow for great views of neighboring Willow Glen Park. A public art park will soon be included to incorporate student-inspired professionally fabricated art.
